Childrens Booksellers
The California Children's Booksellers Alliance (CCBA)
CALIBA recognizes the importance of the voices and actions of our children's booksellers, who share similarities, unique perspectives, and challenges within the greater organization. Often one of the most profitable sections in a store, children's booksellers are valued for their special knowledge, creativity, insight, and connection within their communities.
CALIBA relies on the expertise and activism of the children's booksellers within our ranks to participate in our committees, help develop education sessions, author speaker selections, and develop our Golden Poppy Book Awards final ballot.
CALIBA membership includes membership in CCBA.
The concept of children’s books as “windows and mirrors”* is simple: that children’s literature should contain diverse characters and experiences such that all children can find representations of their own experiences and identities (“mirrors”), and be exposed to many experiences and identities of people unlike themselves (“windows”). Each year, the Mirrors & Windows Committee of the Golden Poppy Book Awards selects a title created by a California author and/or illustrator that best reflects and shares diversity in its many forms.
Thank you to Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop for introducing the idea of Mirrors & Windows.
