About City Lights Books Founded in 1953 by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Peter D. Martin, City Lights Books is one of the few truly great independent bookstores in the United States, dedicated to growing and sustaining a vibrant community of readers, writers, and thinkers who share a passion for the beauty and the power of the written word.
In 1955, Ferlinghetti launched City Lights Publishers with his now iconic Pocket Poets Series, home to Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl and Other Poems,” a groundbreaking classic that Ferlinghetti (with help from the ACLU) successfully defended against obscenity charges in 1957. Today, City Lights has approximately three hundred books in print, publishing 8-12 new titles each year.
The City Lights Foundation (a 501(c)3 public charity) was established in 1999 to foster public engagement with books and literary culture. The Foundation’s various activities include an annual roster of free literary events; a publishing program for books focused on West Coast culture and politics; and a range of educational outreach efforts.

Bookstore for Sale
Camino Books: For the Road Ahead (previously Diesel, A Bookstore at Del Mar Highlands Town Center, in Carmel Valley, San Diego) is up for sale! The recently moved, renamed, and renewed bookstore could be the best gift of the season!
Our beautiful store is the talk of Del Mar, and a haven for booklovers in North County. We are so excited about the new store but, unfortunately, we are having to step back. For personal reasons we are having to sell it and are hoping to find the right applicant for moving the store forward.
Originally from Oakland, we started as Diesel and have had 5 stores over our 36 year history. We sold our Brentwood store in LA last year, and renamed our Del Mar store and moved it this Spring.
Known for our excellent curation and vigorous events program, our stores have always worked with schools, concert venues, nonprofits, and institutions along with our daily supply of a diverse range of books to our communities.
We have over 90 years combined bookselling experience and have created internationally recognized bookstores. After many decades of passionate hard work, we now have to scale back and place the store in good hands.
We were drawn to open a store in North County out of our love for the area and the owners of Del Mar Plaza’s dedicated desire to have a great independent bookstore again. Del Mar has had a wonderful history of great bookstores over the decades, but had been sorely lacking one.
We, and the local businesses, families and customers who rely on Camino Books are hoping someone new will seize this opportunity to maintain a great bookstore in the area. Inquiries can be made directly to the owners by filling out the application here.
We are looking for new energy, passion and commitment to serve this wonderful community with all of its reading needs. We will help through the transition and look forward to keeping a great bookstore in Del Mar, as the village deserves.
We look forward to a smooth transition for the store once the right buyer is in place.
Happy Reading!
Alison Reid & John Evans
