The COMPETE act is heading towards the California Senate Appropriations Committee, so it's time to show up in support of it!

The Institute of Local Self Reliance and Economic Security California Action are inviting CALIBA members to attend a Press Conference at the Capital Building in Sacramento at 10am on August 11th. If you are interested and able to attend, please fill out this form so we can share information with you. They're hoping to get attendance numbers that show support in this bill. Your attendance is the most important thing! The CALIBA Political Advocacy Committee will be coordinating the attendees.

The COMPETE Act (AB 1776), closes a 119-year-old loophole in California law. Right now, state antitrust law can only act when two or more companies team up to rig a market. It does almost nothing, when ONE company is big enough to rig the market all by itself. AB 1776 fixes that, giving California real power to challenge a single dominant company that squeezes small sellers, entrepreneurs, and pop-up vendors like you.

Can’t attend in person, that’s ok, CALIBA’s Political Advocacy Committee will be working on organizing other ways you can show your support in the coming weeks. They’ll also be adding resources, like this poster, to this shared folder here. Questions, reach out to Hannah.

Fall Fest Bookstore Tours

*THIS YEAR ONLY!* SAN DIEGO BOOKSTORE TOURS, SEPT. 13TH: CAMINO BOOKS - FOR THE ROAD AHEAD & MEET CUTE ROMANCE BOOKSHOP

Join fellow booksellers the day before Fall Fest for a special tour of San Diego Stores. Made possible by our friends and members at the UC San Diego Bookstore!

We've asked the participating stores to share what they love about San Diego and what places to visit! We'll feature 2 stores each week leading up to August 30th (end of registration).

Camino Books: For the Road Ahead photo

"North County Love goes to the whole stretch of the Coast Highway from Torrey Pines State Park north through Del Mar all the way to Carlsbad. A string of towns look out over a line of beautiful beaches facing the Pacific. Stop for coffee at Little Joy Coffee Bar and Wine Shop; Del Mar Plaza where Camino Books is; Fish 101 in Solana Beach (and Leucadia); the walk along the bluff from Cardiff to Encinitas; Swami's lookout and garden; Prager Brothers Bakery in Encinitas; and the whole town of Leucadia ending at the beach at Batiquitos Lagoon. California in its beach town prime!"

—John Evans, Camino Books: For the Road Ahead

Meet Cute Romance Bookshop photo

"People always talk about the weather in San Diego, and they're right, it's great. But what's really so special is what the weather enables. Year-round hiking, hundreds of perfect beach days a year, or, if you're me, truly spectacular farmers markets in every season nearly every day of the week. La Mesa's is Friday afternoons and my personal favorite, over in Hillcrest, is Sunday mornings."

—Becca Title, Meet Cute Romance Bookshop
