CALIBA BOARD OF DIRECTOR NOMINATIONS ARE OPEN!

CALIBA’s Board of Directors invites you to join the dynamic team that helps steer the organization to best serve our indie bookselling community. 

If you are interested in nominating yourself or another bookseller, email Recruiting Committee Chair, Mark O’Neal.

Nominations to the board will close on April 15th.

Ballots will be sent to bookstore principal members on May 15th and voting will close on May 30th.

2026 CALIBA SPRING FORUMS: OAKLAND EDUCATION SESSIONS

CALIBA Spring Forums feature lively conversation, education, rep picks, and networking. 

AND, new this year we'll meet the day before for owner-specific education sessions with our Owners' Retreat.

Oakland Spring Forum Education Panelists

Storytime Roundtable: Creating a Better Climate for Kidlit) 

Mac Barnett's Make Believe urges us to respect and support children's literature the way we'd respect and support reading for adults. Following his keynote, this session lets booksellers share their best ideas for curation and displays, advice for children's events, and ways to cultivate kids' joy in reading. Roundtable led by Carol Doup Muller (Hicklebee's, San Jose).

Education Panel: Make and Break Rules for Buying

Rules for buying & strategic inefficiencies. Panel led by Vanessa Martini (Green Apple Books, San Francisco), Steven Sparks (Point Reyes Books, Pt. Reyes Station),

and Grace Lane (Linden Tree Books, Los Altos).

Education Panel to Roundtable: Bookseller to Sales Rep Networking Breakout

Reps will introduce themselves, their jobs and their role in the industry. Then we break out into tables or sections for them to get to meet and greet with frontline booksellers. Speakers: Kristin Rassmussen (Scholastic), Marissa Moss (Creston Books) and Kevin Peters (PGW).

Education Panel: Event P&L

How to do Event P&L and why it is important. Led by Mary Williams (Skylight Books, Los Angeles). 

Education Panel to Roundtable: Hiring + Onboarding, Performance and Retention

A short introduction from panel about different stages of employee management to a breakout groups with panelists leading discussions for space to ask specific questions. Led by Eileen McCormick (Green Apple Books, San Francisco) and Camden Avery (Booksmith, San Francisco).

3 more days to order the Indie Summer Reading Guide. Take advantage of the FREE marketing materials for your store (print and digital catalog) to share with your new and returning customers! You can order through RAMP (Regional Association Marketing & Promotion) by March 15th. Catalogs will arrive to stores by May 8th, to help you promote summer reading in time for Memorial Day!

Booksellers, we also want your input on the titles within the catalog. Send in your Summer 2026 title recommendations that your store would love to feature.

OUTSTANDING INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S BOOKS - FREE VIRTUAL EVENT: MARCH 16TH, 5PM PST

Books Across Borders, in partnership with the United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY), will host Outstanding International Children’s Books: A Celebration, a free virtual event highlighting the 2026 USBBY Outstanding International Books list.

The panel will be moderated by Michael Reynolds of Europa Editions and will feature presentations by Susan Polos, President of USBBY; Jackie Garcia-Morales of The Storytellers Foundation; Laura Simeon of Kirkus Reviews; and Riky Stock of Frankfurter Buchmesse. Register here!
