WHY WE SUPPORT THE COMPETE ACT BY JENNIFER MEDEIROS (THROUGH THE FOLD, SAN DIEGO)
For independent bookstores, this isn't just another piece of legislation; it's an opportunity to help shape a fairer marketplace. The California COMPETE Act strengthens protections against anti-competitive business practices that squeeze small businesses, limit consumer choice, and make it harder for local entrepreneurs to thrive. It doesn't punish success or prevent companies from growing; it simply ensures that growth doesn't come at the expense of innovation, competition, and the communities we serve. If we want a future where independent bookstores can continue creating spaces for connection, discovery, and local culture, we need to make our voices heard.
As Nina Barrett, owner of Chicago's Bookends & Beginnings, reflected after challenging Amazon's monopolistic practices in court, "Any opportunity to raise people's consciousness about that is in itself worthwhile! And one day, hopefully, one of these efforts will succeed!" This is one of those opportunities. Contact your representatives, encourage your customers to do the same, and remind them that every call, email, and conversation helps build momentum for a more competitive and equitable future.
