UPDATE: CALIFORNIA'S ANTITRUST LAW HEARING

Thank you to all of our members who sent in personal statements for last week's Antitrust Hearing. Committee members heard from representatives from Google, Yelp, and various experts before opening up the floor to the public to share experiences, good or bad, with large tech corporations. Hannah read a personal statement on behalf of Emily Autenrieth, owner of A Seat at the Table Books in Sacramento and Elayna Trucker, Buyer and Operations Manager at Napa Bookmine, read her own personal statement. This is an on-going conversation that the CALIBA staff and Political Advocacy committee will continue to monitor. The following expert report meeting will be: August 15, 2024 - Concerted Action, Consumer Welfare Standard, & Enforcement and Exemptions. CALIBA will keep you posted on any new updates in our newsletter.

JULY IS #MARGINSBOOKSELLINGMONTH!

From our friends at The Word, A Storytelling Sanctuary:

This July, The Word, A Storytelling Sanctuary presents the fourth annual #MarginsBookselling Month. The goal of this program is to celebrate BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, neurodiverse, and disabled booksellers - a community that works tirelessly to get our books into the hands of readers. We are excited to support 200+ booksellers and showcase 150+ bookstores via our map and database that are working to center diverse voices and stories. This year we are collaborating with Bookshop, Libro.fm, Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, and industry advocate Danny Caine, co-owner of Raven Bookstore in Lawrence, KS, and author of How to Fight Amazon and Why and How to Protect Bookstores and Why, amongst others. Together we will highlight booksellers and the work they do and celebrate bookstores and booksellers. We will host a GIVEAWAY, plus stay tuned for our list of events. You can check out our past events here to get an idea of what we are cooking up.

FROM OUR FRIENDS AT THE ABA

ABACUS, We Like You!

There's still a month remaining to complete your ABACUS report, ABA’s free annual financial benchmarking survey! Not only is ABACUS an incredibly useful tool for your business, it also helps ABA in our work to support you! If you would like assistance, or are participating for the first time, ABA CFO (and former bookstore owner) PK Sindwani will be offering several ABACUS workshops with step-by-step instructions for completing the questionnaire.
